Facts & Statistics

Depression, disruptive Behavior Disorders and
Anxiety are about as common as fractured limbs in children and
adolescents (Institute of Medicine).
☼
20% of youth will experience at least one depressive
illness before they reach their adult years (Institute of Medicine).

Childhood trauma interferes with children’s capacity
to integrate sensory, emotional and cognitive information, resulting
in disorganized or inappropriate response to stress (Streeck-Fischer
and van derkolk, 2000).

Risk factors associated with suicidality in children
include a history of maltreatment, depression and reactive
aggression.

The majority of mental illnesses begin in childhood.

Mental illness drains our economy of more than $80
billion every year, accounting for 15% of the total economic burden

Almost 60 million Americans – one of four adults and

at age 14 and older drop out of high school – the highest dropout
rate of any disability group (U.S. Department of Education, 2001).

Suicide remains a serious public health concern and is
the third leading cause of death in youth aged 10 to 24. (National
Strategy for Suicide Prevention, 2001).
